Playa del Carmen is highly considered the Riviera Maya’s capital. Playa, how we commonly call it, is a real Caribbean city with attentive and cosmopolitan environment. Playa del Carmen is famous for having one of the most beautiful beaches in the Riviera Maya, with smooth and white sand as well the impressive blue ocean.

Besides the beach, Playa del Carmen has the famous Quinta Avenida (5th Ave.). This eclectic street goes parallel to the beach and is full of restaurants, bars and Mexican souvenirs stores.

The Riviera Maya has focused all the nightlife in the famous 5th avenue in Playa del Carmen and the surroundings. Ask in the hotel reception for suggestions of the funniest places. Join the local people and tourist for the classic night walk for the entire avenue, you can choose either sit in a outdoors bar, have a drink and meet new people or choose a restaurant to have a good dinner and see people and street artists.

Playa del Carmen is full of activities to keep you busy and excited. Just a couple of blocks from Hotel El Campanario you can find basketball and tennis courts, a golf course with 18 holes, and skydiving for those more fearless; just for mention something you can do here.

Entrance documents. American and Canadian tourists must have valid passport. Tourist from other countries must verify with the local embassy. You can ask for a Visa extension in the Migratory office in Playa del Carmen. At your arrival, a touristic card must be delivered and you must return it to the airport at the departure; at that moment you will pay a departure tax in Mexican pesos or USD.

Clothing. As a suggestion bring casual and light clothes, use sandals or sportive sneakers, to walk in the archeological sites, tours or natural parks. Remember to bring something more elegant in case you want to have a nice dinner or just to have fun at night. We recommend to use sun glasses and sunblock. Insect repellent may be useful too, but you can easily get in at your arrival in Playa del Carmen.

Transportation. The principal arrival point is Cancun International Airport, from it you can arrive to any point in the Riviera Maya by the 307 highway that joins Cancun Downtown with Tulum, and Playa del Carmen is placed in the middle of them.

Hotel El Campanario is 40 min. distance by car from the airport. There are boats leaving from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel every 30 minutes and the trip las 35 minutes. Between the dock and the Hotel El Campanario there is just one kilometer of distance.

Also there are local buses that takes you to different points in the Riviera Maya from Playa del Carmen. There are buses leaving to Cancun every ten minutes and the bus stop is 1 block far from Hotel El Campanario. If you prefer you can use taxi or rent a car in any agency in the city.

Communications. Playa del Carmen has all the new technologies and communications every modern and cosmopolitan city has; internet, telephones and cellphones in rent. The post office in Playa del Carmen is in Ave. Juarez / street 15 and 20, it opens Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 05:00pm., and Saturdays from 09:00 am to 12:00pm. Hotel El Campanario offers free WiFi in the reception as well as in all the rooms.

Weather. Subtropical with rain in summer. It is very nice with a temperature average of 26°C. From November to February there are cool winds and a little rain, but the temperature goes down until the 17°C. Strong but short tropical rains are very common in summer, leaving a humid and warm environment.

Medical attention. Playa del Carmen has all the medical facilities under any emergency. Pharmacies are open 24 hrs. and there are 3 in Hotel las Golondrinas surroundings as well as local hospitals.

Money. Mexican Peso is the national currency but in some touristic places US dollars are accepted. Almost all the establishments accept credit cards, but you can find banks and ATMs near Hotel El Campanario.

Voltage. In Mexico, the electricity is of 110 volts.

Language and religion. Spanish is the official language in Mexico, but we have some Mayan villages in the region where Mayan is spoken. In the most of the tourist areas people speaks English. The principal religion is Catholicism and there are many churches in Playa del Carmen that offers mass every day. The nearest is just in front of Hotel El Campanario.
